Sam Schmetterer of Silver Lake Middle School, Kingston, MA presented a live class demonstrating the Australian didgeridoo to his music class as well as the orphans of HIV/AIDS and vulnerable children from the Demonstration School in Lilongwe, Malawi. All the students enjoyed the sounds this unique instrument made and Mr. Schmetterer did a fine job bringing to life this Aborigine tribal experience.
Mr. Sydney Kojere, the music teacher at the Demonstration School, demonstrated a Malawian tribal drum. The session ended with Mr. Kojere drumming while the students in Malawi sang to the students at the Silver Lake Regional Middle School.
Ms. Kathleen Spicer, also from Silver Lake Middle School, taught a class comparing the climate and topography in Kingston, MA to Malawi Africa. Her students put together a Powerpoint pictorial presentation that was later viewed by the students in Malawi showing a glimpse of Kingston from crops of cranberries to Cape style homes. Students from the Demonstration school were in awe of the school buses and the size of the middle school.
